version>02 festival

Version>02 A Digitial Arts Convergence ( April 18-22, 2002 )

@ the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and other locations

Version>02 was the FIRST Version Festival that we started in collaboration with the Performance Department of the MCA. This year's theme centered around the digital commons. Besides being rad, it was one of the first "tactical media" conferences/festivals in the United States. TheVersion > 02 festival website is lost but we discovered fragments of its planning and some of the programming residing on various urls on the Lumpen server and at the wonderful web.archive.com.

Version>02 April 18, 19, 20, (21), 2002
Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 East Chicago Avenue

For the first iteration of this event new media producers, artists, musicians, filmmakers, programmers, tactical media provocateurs, designers, information architects, and critical thinkers are asked to comment on the state of the digital commons.

The digital commons requires dialogue about intellectual property, the balance between civil liberties and security, freedom of speech and privacy, issues of access, and the implications of tool use. Some herald the internet and the global communications infrastructure as a protected space that allows creativity and innovation to flourish. Others argue that that our civil liberties are at risk and we are entering a society more perfectly monitored and filtered than any in history. Version>02 focuses on the issues that are defining this debate.

Version>02 is a tour through "the digital commons" and offers an opportunity to meet those who tend to the gardens, fences, and pathways, and to investigate the threats and opportunities that the digital commons face. The MCA Theater offers three days of musical performances, films, and a series of panel discussions. The Version Lab, adjacent to the theater, provides performance space for multimedia artists, video makers, and musicans, and The Lobby is transformed into an informational space for web installations and demonstrations by some of the best in the emergent media arts cultures.

Version>02 Overview
Version>02 is a digital arts and technology convergence co presented by Select Media , OVT and the Museum of Contemporary Art on April 18th, 19th and 20th 2002. For the first iteration of this event we are asking multi-media producers, artists, musicians, filmmakers, programmers, tactical media provocateurs, designers, information architects, and critical thinkers to comment on the state of the digital commons.

The digital commons is a metaphor for the public space that we use to communicate and distribute ideas, where we share tools and resources, and influences the way we transmit knowledge and art.

The digital commons requires dialogue about intellectual property, the balance between civil liberties and security, freedom of speech and privacy, issues of access and the implications of tool use.

Some herald the internet and the global communications infrastructure as a protected space that allows creativity and innovation to flourish. Others argue that that our civil liberties are at risk and we are entering a society more perfectly monitored and filtered than any in history. Version>02 will focus on the issues that are defining this debate.

Version>02 is a tour through the Digital Commons and offers an opportunity to meet those who tend to the gardens, fences, pathways and investigate the threats and opportunities that the digital commons face. It will feature three evenings of musical performances, a film festival, and a symposia of lectures by guest speakers and panel discussion. The A/V Lounge will provide gallery space for artists and performers, and The Lobby will provide an informational space for web installations and demonstrations from some of the best in the emergent digital arts cultures.

Version>02 Coordinators include Yolanda Cursach, Paul B. Davis, Michael Digioia, Brien Dressel, Kathryn Frazier, Jean Kang, Karl Kuhn, Geert Lovink, Doug Lussenhop, Ed Marszewski, Liz Revision, Brien Rullman, and Nato Thompson.
